SiS Mirage 3 M672 and Windows 7

I've decided to test Windows 7 on my cheap old laptop.

The machine in question is Fujitsu Siemens Esprimo Mobile V5535 based on SiS M672 chipset (with integrated graphics).

Installation went pretty smooth and without any problems.
However when I've started to test the new OS I've found an annoying issue: getting extended desktop on my external screen (mainly used for watching movies).
I've tested different available drivers (uvga5 5.20 and 5.12 from SiS and drivers that came from Microsoft via Windows Update) but I couldn't get it working.
The result I had was that when I was turning extended desktop only secondary screen was working and primary was blank (turned off). Clone was working without any problems, switching between screens also.
And the most annoying thing was that I knew it can work like that because it was working under XP on same machine.
Finally after a lot of Googling I've found one post from "amirimon" that helped me to fix things:
Windows 7 WITH Extended dektop - Esprimo V5515

The latest driver from SiS at the moment (uvga5 5.20) will give you driver version 7.14.10.5200 but on Microsoft Update Catalog website you can find 7.14.10.5210 which will fix this annoyance.

There are still few things to fix in next release of those drivers (I have to use same screen resolution on external screen as main LCD or screen goes blank) but at least it's working and there is hope they will fix it in next releases.

Edit:
New drivers do the trick.
UniVGA 5.22 (7.14.10.5220)

I hope that it won't be only me ;)
However I'm still waiting for new drivers as there are still some glitches with this one. However at least it's in working state.

The new drivers, that you can download from SiS's official site do the trick.
Official release of windows 7 brought all new drivers :-)

i mean the graphics driver only -the rest of the system is great and drivers are available from windows update but no graphics right now except for standard vga

As far as I can see this chipset is SiS Mirage 2 and there are no drives for that for Vista or 7. Even on Acer's page available drivers are only for XP.

Hey. I got it working!
Just download 5.22 driver from www.sis.com/download page.
There is SiS Mirage 3 driver for Windows 7 already. Dated by the end of October.

Hi, can you give me details on how you got this going? A step by step would be great as I got the pack (and also tried 5.23) and tried manually installing the drivers with the device manager and 'update driver' then pointing the update driver installer to the folders inside 'agppack->win7x64' and 'win7x32' but it says cannot find suitable driver... I really appreciate the effort to get this to work as right now the laptop is running at 1280x768 standard vga (bleh) and should be 1280x800. Really bites... but your post gives hope so if you could plz post that it would be awesome. Thanks again.

i am running win 7 x64.. wonder if thats the issue... hrm

@nemesis
what laptop do you have (exact model number)? If 5.22 or 5.23 doesn't work for you I would suspect you have some other video card or something is wrong with your hardware.
btw. I'm on x64 and it's running fine, well there are few glitches but nothing major.

@nemesis
I've digged a bit for those drivers and it looks like there are no win7 drivers for your machine. The chip you have was released sometime in '05 and it's no longer supported. IGP drivers for Vista and Win7 cover only 671 and 672 family. And the latest drivers for your card are for XP.

I've got a similar problem with the Fujitsu-Siemens V5535. I'm now running 64-bit Windows 7. The monitor works, however the only screen resolutions allowed are 800x600, 1024x768 and 1280x768. The problem is that the monitor should be 1280x800 but currently the drivers do not support this mode, meaning all pictures are stretched/squashed.
Any fixes would be great!

Happy new year to all!

New problem.
I downloaded the last drivers from sis website(7.14.10.5260) and they work. Now the new problem is: I have connected to the external VGA port a full HDTV( Toshiba 32XV505) and the best display resolution is 1024x768. I use a VGA cable connected to a VGA port on my HDTV. Can someone can tell me how can I change to a bigger resolution on 2 display.

I had this problem with previous version of the drivers that sometimes (not always) wasn't detecting my FullHD Monitor/TV (Samsung).
Please make sure that you set you screen to show only on primary display (laptop LCD), disconnect the TV, reboot the machine, connect cable, Switch to TV.
And check can you change resolution of your TV then.

I did what you seed pbogo but everything is the same. Another thing is that my laptop sees my 2th display like "generic non-pnp monitor". Can it have something related to this. I seems lake I can't find any display driver for this TOSHIBA HDTV. What else can i do?

10tx.

it's possible. however i'm not able to find this TV model on toshiba's website. there is plenty of offers for it but for toshiba it looks like it doesn't exist.

Hi pbogu, Firstly can I say thank you so much for this post - it has REALLY helped me. I have a V5535 with SIS Mirage 3 672 so your post has got me through the extended display issues. I am now running driver 7.14.10.5270. Whatever I do though, I still cannot get the vga to output any higher than 1024x768 when connected to an HDTV direct by vga. Ideally I need 1280x800, have you ever managed that?? Thanks for your help.

Resolution for extended screen is done by Windows itself independent of display drivers. However you may need to install your monitor/TV drivers if you have any to be recognized correctly by Windows.
